One of the more popular destinations in Costa Rica is the Arenal Volcano. One of the most active volcanoes in the country, the Arenal attracts a lot of visitors because of the teeming wildlife that lives in the surrounding national park.
Going on an expedition to the Arenal Volcano will take some time and preparation. Before you decide to go on an adventure to the Arenal, take time off and visit the city of La Fortuna de San Carlos first, which is supposed to be your gateway city to the Arenal area. La Fortuna de San Carlos is not exactly one of the country's oldest cities. It was only established in the 1930's. People from all over started to migrate here although it only served as a small village in the area until the 1950's, when the La Fortuna was declared to be a full-fledged town in the heart of Costa Rica's Central Valley. Visiting the town will give you a charming, panoramic view of the Arenal Volcano. Its quiet and peaceful atmosphere make it the perfect place to be in before hitting the mountains. The Arenal sits at around 10 km away from the town proper. Of course, as a town that is considered as a gateway to the Arenal, the La Fortuna has started to become a bustling town catering to the foreigners who regularly visit the Arenal. Restaurants, motels, and inns have sprouted all over the quiet town to serve the weary travelers from the Arenal area. In the evening, it's also good to be around the town to witness the show of lava and red rocks from the Arenal itself. Aside from the volcano, there are still a lot of other destinations that you can check out while you are in town. There is the La Catarata de Fortuna, a stunning waterfall located just outside the town. In addition to that, there's also the Tabacon Hot Springs, plus some other opportunities for hiking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and horseback riding. You can talk about...
