Central America Vacation ArticlesLooking Back at the Past in Cartago
Every country has its top tourist destinations. These are locations where most tourists can be found, because these are the places most tourists are familiar with. But this does not, in any way, make them superior to the others. Sometimes, some places are just under-appreciated because they are not marketed well, or they do not conform to the stereotype that people have already made for a certain country. In Costa Rica, for instance, the standard route for tourists is to start off in San Jose, go to Arenal, Manuel Antonio, and the outlying beaches. These locations already have established systems for tourists in place, but a lot of other destinations in the country remain undiscovered a lot. Once you're already tired from heat of the beach, where will you go to next? Costa Rica has destinations that will allow for mountain eco-lodges, fireplaces, and Jacuzzi. This is true if you are coming from a cold country where this is pretty common. But I think it's advisable to stay in these places when you are getting tired of all the activity in the coasts. One excellent destination for this kind of adventure is the city of Cartago, the seat of the first colonial government in Costa Rica. Founded in 1563 by Juan Vazquez de Coronado, Cartago happens to be the first Spanish settlement in the entire country. It was only in 1823 when the capital was transferred to Santiago. This was because Cartago is located very close to Volcan Irazu, which has almost destroyed the city in 1723. Why would anyone want to be here? The rich heritage, history, and culture, of course! Going here is like stepping a few centuries back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when Spanish culture is very obvious in the country. Taking a look at places like Monumento Nacional Guayabo and Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles (the largest church in the city) is a testament to this. On top of that, remnants of a lush environment is also noticeable, as the city was once a forested area before getting cleared up by colonial farmers.
