Cities that are rich in heritage and culture are fascinating places to visit and explore. Because of the density of people living there for decades or even centuries, certain sections have been developed a little differently than the others. Proper city planning requires that components of a city develop into contributing to a unified urban culture, but it does not hurt to have some place where you can escape from the rest of the urban population once in a while.
Sarchi and Grecia are not exactly part of San Jose, but their proximity to the capital make them a viable destination for those who want to go out of the capital during a day trip. These towns are well-known for their arts-and-crafts industries and are heralded from their very different atmosphere compared to the national capital. This is the reason why they are a favorite out-of-the-city destination by San Jose residents in the first place. The road to Grecia and Sarchi is actually filled with small farming towns that remind us about the core of Costa Rica's economy, agriculture. Life here is even more laid back than the characteristically laid back lifestyle in San Jose. For those who want to take life a little more slowly than usual, a trip to the Costa Rican countryside is always a good option. Grecia is famous for its metal church, which is kind of unique for a house of worship. It is a picturesque town that kind of reminds me of rural America, where there are a few shops, scattered houses, and a central plaza where activity commences. Meanwhile, Sarchi is another town that is most famous for its craftsmaking industry. It is most famous for producing those oxcarts that you see all over Costa Rica. Most of these oxcarts are now used for decorative purposes, but they were once used in agricultural production. Architecturally speaking, there really isn't anything to visit here, but the local marketplace is a gold mine for native souvenirs. We all need a break from the city once in a while.
