Central America Vacation ArticlesTeatro Nacional in San Jose
Art and theater aren't exactly Costa Rica's most popular suit as far as the global stage is concerned. You'll normally find the best theaters and museums in Paris, London, and New York, among others. Despite this, Costa Ricans still have a lot to be proud of.
The largest and most important theater in the country is the National Theater of Costa Rica or Teatro Nacional, which is located on Avenida 2 between Calle 3 and Calle 5. Like all other theaters, it should follow a certain artistic style. In the case of the Teatro Nacional, it followed the art deco style of the Opera House in Paris. The building was not really an initiative of the government. Rather, it was established by the rich owners of coffee fields in the 19th century, showing the strength of the country's coffee business during that time. This measure was done after it was allegedly said that world-renowned prima donna Adelina Patti refused to perform in the country for its lack of a proper opera house. Of course this is just a legend and it is often denied to be true. Although it only has a capacity of a little more than 1,000 people (it was created during a time when there were only 19,000 people in San Jose), it performs as the missing piece that completed Costa Ricans' historic theatrical identity. Its foyer and main lobby are adorned with paintings and other classical art decorations that were primarily Italian in origin. Meanwhile, the theater itself can be transformed into a ballroom that hosted a great number of social gatherings in the city during the past. Today, various exhibitions, shows, and plays are regularly conducted inside the halls of the Teatro Nacional. This includes regular performances from the National Symphonic Orchestra (NSO). If you are curious to find out how classical music is played Costa Rica-style, a visit to the Teatro Nacional is a must. Regular shows showcasing Costa Rican music are regularly shown, too.
