The city of Liberia is the largest and most important city of Guanacaste province, serving as its capital and cultural center. It is located around 215 kilometers northwest of San Jose and is served by the Daniel Oduber International Airport, the second most important airport in the entire country. The airport is located some 8 kilometers away from the city proper, so you can easily fly to this airport in order to get to the city instead of taking a long journey over land.

As mentioned, Liberia is the Costa Rican province's cultural capital and is the best city to be in if you want a showcase of Guancaste culture in one location. The city is also best known for its numerous beaches and whitewashed colonial houses, which has earned it the name of "white city ( la ciudad blanca )," and national parks. Liberia is often a starting point for many tourists who want to explore the nature wonders of this Costa Rican province, such as the Rincon de la Viejo National Park and Santa Rosa National Park.

Colonial homes in Liberia are built with a special type of white clay called bahareque . This is the only city in the entire country where you can see numerous houses built with the same type of white clay. And yet, even though it is largely colonial in architecture, the city remains its uncharacteristically Tico vibe. Just merely walking around the city is a good-enough way in order to appreciate Liberia . One must-visit for any tourist is the central plaza, where the Iglesia Immaculada Concepcion de Maria.

Just in the outskirts of the city, you can already get in touch with nature. If you are lucky, you can get a glimpse of the famed howler monkeys making their way around the Guanacaste trees, the national tree of Costa Rica.

Clearly, there's a lot to be admired about Liberia . Why don't you start ahead and make a visit to Costa Rica's second most-important city?
