This awesome park has a total area of 14,083 hectares that house different kinds of faunas, floras and other species and watersheds around the volcano in the park. The national park has moist and semi-deciduous forests and includes a terrain that is barren and rocky. The climate of the park is different and diverse in many areas. Dry areas are closely followed by regions where the rainfall is constant throughout and thus providing habitat to epiphytes.

There are around 257 different and beautiful species of awesome birds. The list includes Black Faced Solitaire, Emerald Toucanet, Montezuma Oropendula, Spectacled Owl, Three-wattled Bellbird, Great Curassow and many others. The lists of mammals that get habitat in the region of the park are Jaguars, Howler, Spider, Cougars, Tiger Cats and others.

The ample number of streams and rivers protected by the national park feed Nicoya Gulf basins and the Lake Nicaragua floodplains. The hot springs located near the headquarters of the park are awesome. The site of Las Pailas with bubbling mud pots and geysers are deeply associated with reservoirs located underground. These sites are covered over an area of 50 hectares.

The national park can be visited from two different sides—Caribbean side and the Pacific side. The entrance from Caribbean side is situated near splendid rain forests. The environment closely located to this side is green and has an average temperature that is little bit cooler in comparison with the Pacific side. This side also contains a mammoth number of flora and fauna in comparison to the other one. If you are taking entrance through this side, you will be able to take the experience of hot springs. The Pacific side is much hotter and drier and it is preferable not to take this side for the entrance.
