Shopping can be very fun with Costa Rica, with all the unique merchandise and other goods that you can only purchase here and not anywhere else. If you know the right places to shop in, you will be also in for a lot of other very good bargains at very cheap prices!

Since Costa Rica has a large influx of tourists year after year, many cities have already developed these centers, called mercado central, where you can purchase your souvenirs. However, these shops are tourist-oriented so expect that the goods are priced somewhat higher than their equivalents in regular markets. For best measure, you should visit these market places and go check out the regular ones before deciding to buy anything.

Most of the souvenirs that you will find here are handicrafts created by the local population, most of which are indigenous makers. This gives the handicrafts an extra touch that you could treasure with you on your way back home.

For this purpose, no other location can be better as a souvenir center for you than Sarchi, which is just a few minutes away from Alajuela. You will find that there are also a lot of tourists here, but the fame is justified as you will see hundreds upon hundreds of local artisans showing off their excellent handicraft work. The workshops are also located here so you can get your souvenirs from here at marked down prices. You can also be sure that the goods you find here are authentic.

Now if a more typical way of shopping is what you're looking for, no other city beats San Jose, the commercial and economic capital of Costa Rica. Shops and galleries like the Mercado Nacional de Artesania, La Buchaca, and the Galeria Namu. There are also a couple of expensive jewelry stores that specialize in pre-Columbian style jewelry everywhere, such as the Suraska.
