Geography is destiny, they say. In that case, Costa Rica was destined to become a surfing mecca, as it has been given oceans on both sides, extensive coastlines, and good locations where waves are high enough to harbor a thriving surfer population. A visit to Costa Rica's beaches should always include an attempt at surfing. So I encourage you to do so.
But where exactly to go? It would depend on the side of the country that you would like to be in. If you are in the Pacific coast, the best location for surfing has got to be Tamarindo. The waves are high enough, there's adequate accommodation right in front of the beach, and the night life is something to look forward to. You can almost certainly find somebody there who went to Tamarindo specifically to enjoy the waves. If crowds along the beach are not your type, then take a short 15-minute trip to Tamarindo and proceed to Playa Grande, dubbed to be among the best beaches along the Guanacaste coast. The nice thing about Playa Grande is the presence of the endangered leather back sea turtles, which go this beach once every year to lay down their eggs. On the other side of the country, the Atlantic coast, areas like Puerto Viejo come to mind. Puerto Viejo is particularly popular among expert surfers because of the famed Salsa Brava waves. These waves are so high that only expert surfers are advised to ride them. Since Puerto Viejo is located right inside the eccentric Limon province, also take time to tour around the province and see a world not quite like what we've known about Costa Rica.
