Rio Celeste: One of Costa Rica's Natural Wonders

Thank author of this post/comment

In a recent poll among the locals, it was asked what they considered to be the seven wonders of their country are. Not surprisingly, all seven wonders of Costa Rica are natural wonders. The country is a haven for natural wonders. It is these natural wonders and diverse wildlife that tourists from all over the world come from. Let's talk about one of Costa Rica's seven wonders, Rio Celeste.

Rio means river in Spanish, while celeste refers to the shade of blue associated with the day sky. Hence, we can translate the name to something like "the sky blue river." Indeed, there is something different with the color of this river in Tenorio Volcano National Park that makes it a curiosity. Apparently, this phenomenon of clear water turning into a light blue shade is due to the chemical reaction from volcanic materials along the river. When you see the clear water flowing through the Rio Celeste and turning sky blue, you would think it's magic. The waterfalls at the end of the line give the overall experience a different sound.

As mentioned above, Rio Celeste is located inside the Tenorio Volcano National Park. It does take some work to get to the river. It will take you a little over an hour-and-a-half of hiking through the Tenorio National Park until you get to the majestic waters of the Rio Celeste. There will be a lot of ups and downs and the trail can get a little slippery. Along the way you will have the opportunity to take a dip in any of the hot spring pools. Don't miss any of them!

There is a spot along the river where the clear water turns to its light blue color. The hiking trail will lead you there. You can go down to the base of the waterfalls and take a dip again. It is not going to be any hot, though.

Here's one good video that I found about the Rio Celeste. Believe what it says. The Rio Celeste does look like it came out of a story book.
